De-Thatching and Aeration

 What is Thatch?

Thatch is an organic layer of material composted of dead grass, roots, and stems that develop between your lawn and the soil surface. Thatch build-up occurs when the turf produces this debris faster than it can be broken down. While a small layer of thatch is good for your lawn since it provides protection from extreme temperatures and keeps moisture in the soil, too much thatch can prevent oxygen from reaching the soil and roots, encourage pest and disease issues, and reduce the effectiveness of herbicides and fertilizer. Our mechanical dethatching process consists of scouring the layer of debris to pull up the thatch and removing it from your lawn.

Aeration

What is Aeration?

Compact soil prevents grass from establishing a healthy root system and can prevent water and fertilizer from reaching the roots of grass where they are needed. Foot traffic, lawn mowers, and heavy rain all contribute to compacted soil. Aeration can help relieve compacted soil. Aeration is the process of removing plugs in the soil in order to break up soil compaction thus allowing oxygen and water to reach the root zone. It is commonly referred to as core aeration in the lawn care industry. This service allows the roots of your grass to grow deeper and in return keeping your lawn thicker and greener.

Benefits:

  • Reduced soil compaction
  • Stronger turf roots
  • Enhanced thatch breakdown
  • Increases nutrient availability
  • Reduces water runoff and assists with drainage
  • Prepares grass for Winter dormancy and green Spring
  • Improved fertilizer uptake and usage

When and how often is it needed?

Most home lawns will benefit from an annual aeration. Depending on the foot traffic and conditions, some lawns may need aeration more than once per year. Cool season turf grass such as Tall Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass can be aerated in the spring as well as the fall. Warm season turf grass such as Bermuda should be completed in the Spring.
